The Stack
The stack · beginner
The stack is the zone where spells and abilities wait to resolve. It's the heart of how Magic handles "I do X" -> "I respond Y" -> "I respond Z" sequences.
How it works
- When you cast a spell or activate an ability, it goes on top of the stack.
- Both players get priority. Anyone who has priority can put something else on top of the stack.
- When everyone passes priority in succession with the stack non-empty, the top spell or ability resolves -- the most recently added thing.
- Repeat until the stack is empty.
This is "last in, first out." The last spell played resolves first.
Things that don't use the stack
- Mana abilities (e.g. tapping a basic land for {G}) -- they resolve immediately.
- Static abilities ("Creatures you control get +1/+1") -- they're always on, no stack needed.
- Some replacement effects (e.g. "if a card would be put into a graveyard, exile it instead").
- Special actions like playing a land.
Common example
You cast Lightning Bolt targeting an opponent's creature. They cast Counterspell targeting your Lightning Bolt. You cast Veil of Summer to protect your spell.
Stack (top to bottom):
- Veil of Summer
- Counterspell
- Lightning Bolt
Resolution order:
- Veil of Summer resolves -> Counterspell can no longer target a green spell. Counterspell is countered as a state-based action when its target becomes illegal.
- Lightning Bolt resolves -> creature takes 3 damage.
Why this matters
Understanding the stack is the difference between "I cast my spell, did it work?" and being able to plan multi-step interactions. Most of Magic's depth lives here.
