Commander Brackets (B1-B5)
Commander · beginner
The bracket system is a shared vocabulary for power-level conversations. It was introduced by the Commander Format Panel in early 2025 and is updated periodically. Brackets are descriptive, not prescriptive -- the goal is to help tables agree on what kind of game they want before shuffling up.
The official Game Changers list (queried live from Scryfall in this dashboard) is the central tool for distinguishing brackets. A card is on that list if the format panel considers it strong enough to meaningfully shift a game.
Bracket 1 -- Exhibition
Vibe: Theme decks, jank, story-driven decks. Sometimes called the "ultra-casual" bracket.
- No Game Changers
- No mass land destruction
- No two-card infinite combos
- No chains of extra turns
- Decks often have intentional restrictions (tribal, art theme, "every card is a card I opened")
- Games are usually long, story-heavy, with lots of board interaction
Bracket 2 -- Core
Vibe: Precon-level. This is where most casual tables sit.
- No Game Changers
- No mass land destruction
- No two-card infinite combos
- No chains of extra turns
- Games usually run to turn 8 or later
- Stock precons usually fit here, and lightly upgraded precons still fit. Not every precon does: a few carry a Game Changer or a combo that grades higher.
This is the default assumption for "casual Commander" if no one says otherwise.
Bracket 3 -- Upgraded
Vibe: Tuned, focused decks that still want long games.
- Up to 3 Game Changers allowed
- Two-card combos are okay if they can't fire early (roughly before turn 6)
- Still no mass land destruction and no chains of extra turns
- Most heavily upgraded precons end up here, as do most hand-built mid-power decks
Bracket 4 -- Optimized
Vibe: High-power but not tournament-grade. Wants to win, plays to win, but the table expects a real game.
- Game Changers unrestricted
- Combos can fire on any turn
- Mass land destruction and chains of extra turns are allowed
- Strong tutors and stack interaction expected
- Wins typically come on turns 5-8
This is the upper limit before you're at competitive tables.
Bracket 5 -- Competitive (cEDH)
Vibe: Tournament-optimized. Win as fast as possible, with maximum interaction.
- Everything in B4, plus the full cEDH metagame
- Wins on turns 2-4 are normal
- Stack interaction is constant
- Tournament-legal banlist applies
- Politics is minimal -- the goal is to win, not to socialize
Practical advice
- Match the table. If three players brought B2 decks and one brought B4, the B4 deck is going to crush the table and no one will have fun.
- Play multiple decks. Most regular Commander players keep decks at different brackets so they can match whatever the table wants.
- Self-assessment is hard. It's normal to think your deck is one bracket lower than it actually is. Ask a friend.
- The "two-card infinite combo" line. B1 and B2 prohibit two-card infinite combos: two cards that, once both are out, create an unbounded loop. Commander Spellbook lists known combos and how many cards each needs. Three-card combos that require setup are allowed by the official rules, though some tables ask for more pieces than that. Say so before the game.
- The deck builder's house combo rule. The bracket step in the deck builder has a House combo rule switch, set per draft. Off, the builder follows the official line: a two-card combo breaks Bracket 2. On, it follows a stricter house rule: a combo of two or three pieces, counting the commander and the payoff, breaks Bracket 2, and combos of four or five pieces are shown but allowed. Turn it on when your table asks for more pieces than the official rules do.
- Tutors and fast mana do not set the bracket by themselves. The October 2025 update removed the tutor limits for Brackets 1 and 2. The strongest tutors and fast-mana pieces are on the Game Changers list, so they count through it. Sol Ring is legal in every bracket.
- The banlist sits above every bracket. A card banned in Commander is out at every bracket, including cards that used to be Game Changers. The site checks the banlist live rather than from a copy on this page.
