Mana Abilities
Interactions · intermediate
A mana ability is a special class of activated or triggered ability that produces mana. They have unique timing rules and notably do not use the stack.
What counts as a mana ability
The criteria differ for activated and triggered abilities, and every one of them must hold.
An activated ability is a mana ability if (605.1a):
- It does not require a target.
- It could add mana to a player's mana pool when it resolves.
- It is not a loyalty ability.
- Its cost and effect do not move any card to or from a library.
A triggered ability is a mana ability if (605.1b):
- It does not require a target.
- It triggers from the activation or resolution of an activated mana ability, or from mana being added to a mana pool.
- It could add mana to a player's mana pool when it resolves.
A non-mana ability that happens to produce mana (e.g. a spell that says "add three blue mana") is not a mana ability -- it goes on the stack like any other spell.
The library criterion is new (CR 2026-08-07)
The fourth activated-ability bullet arrived with the 2026-08-07 Comprehensive Rules update, and it changes real cards. Chromatic Sphere reads:
{1}, {T}, Sacrifice this artifact: Add one mana of any color. Draw a card.
It adds mana, needs no target and is not a loyalty ability -- but drawing moves a card from a library, so it is no longer a mana ability. It uses the stack, and your opponents get priority before that mana arrives. Watch for draw, mill, search and "exile the top card of your library" in either the cost or the effect; the rule covers both.
Text that merely names a library without moving a card out of it does not disqualify. Scry keeps the card in the library, so Path of Ancestry's tap ability is still a mana ability.
When evaluating these criteria, ignore replacement effects other than self-replacement effects.
Why this matters
- Mana abilities resolve immediately. Tap a Llanowar Elves for {G}, the green mana is in your pool right away. No priority window.
- You can't respond to a mana ability. Opponents can't kill the Llanowar Elves between activation and resolution.
- Mana abilities work even when you don't have priority in some narrow cases (e.g. paying for a spell while it's being cast).
Common interactions
- Sac a creature for mana while a removal spell targets it: sac via Phyrexian Altar in response to Path to Exile. The mana ability resolves first, the creature dies as a cost, Path's target is now illegal.
- Tap-for-mana abilities can be activated at "mid-cast" payment timing -- which is why Llanowar Elves still gives you mana even if your opponent has Counterspell up. They can't counter the Elves' tap.
- Storm and ritual loops: rituals produce mana via spells that resolve normally -- those are NOT mana abilities, even though they make mana. They use the stack.
