Aura
Game terms · beginner
An Aura is an enchantment subtype that enters the battlefield attached to something and keeps affecting it from there.
How it works
- An Aura enters the battlefield attached to an object or player. What it can be attached to is set by its enchant keyword ability. [303.4]
- An Aura spell requires a target, defined by that same enchant ability. [303.4a]
- The object or player an Aura is attached to is enchanted; the Aura "enchants" it. [303.4b]
- An ability that refers to "enchanted creature" means whatever the permanent is attached to, even when the permanent with the ability isn't itself an Aura. [303.4m]
Rules notes
- An Aura enchanting something illegal, or attached to an object that no longer exists, is put into its owner's graveyard as a state-based action. [303.4c]
- An Aura can't enchant itself, and an Aura that is also a creature can't enchant anything. Either situation sends it to the graveyard. [303.4d]
- The Aura's controller and the enchanted permanent's controller need not be the same, and changing control of one does not change control of the other. Only the Aura's controller activates the Aura's own abilities. [303.4e]
- An Aura put onto the battlefield by an effect rather than by resolving as a spell has its target chosen as it enters, unless the effect names one. [303.4f]
- If no legal object or player exists for it to enchant, an Aura spell on the stack goes to its owner's graveyard instead of entering the battlefield, and an Aura token is simply not created. [303.4g]
