Room
Game terms · intermediate
A Room is an enchantment subtype on a split card with one shared type line. Each half is a door you unlock separately, and an unlocked door's text is live.
How it works
- A permanent split card with a shared type line has two static abilities: while it lacks the "left half unlocked" designation it doesn't have that half's name, mana cost or rules text, and the same for the right half. [709.5]
- Both halves share the types and subtypes on the shared type line. [709.5a]
- "Left half unlocked" and "right half unlocked" are the unlocked designations. A half with its designation is unlocked; otherwise it is locked. [709.5c]
- The half you cast is the one unlocked as the permanent enters. If neither half was cast, it enters with neither designation. [709.5d]
- A card that refers to a door of a Room means a half of that permanent. [709.5j]
Rules notes
- Paying a locked half's mana cost to unlock it is a special action: no stack, and only when you have priority with an empty stack during a main phase of your turn. [709.5e]
- An effect that says to "unlock" a half picks a locked half and gives the permanent that designation; "lock" takes one away. [709.5f] [709.5g]
- An ability that triggers on unlocking a half fires whether the designation arrived as the permanent entered or later. [709.5h]
- "Fully unlocks" triggers when the permanent gets its second designation, or gains both at once from neither. [709.5i]
- A locked half contributes no rules text, so its abilities do nothing until the door opens.
