Convert
Keywords · advanced
Convert turns a double-faced permanent so its other face is up, using the same rules that govern transforming.
How it works
- To convert a permanent, turn it so its other face is up. This follows the same rules that apply to transforming a permanent.
- Converting is the same physical action as transforming, but the game treats them as different game actions. An ability that triggers when a permanent is turned face down or transforms doesn't trigger just because that permanent converts, and vice versa.
- If a spell or ability tells a player to convert a permanent that isn't a double-faced card or double-faced token, nothing happens.
- If a spell or ability tells a player to convert a permanent, and the face it would convert into is an instant or sorcery face, nothing happens.
Rules notes
- Convert has a "hasn't already flipped this turn" style guard: if an activated or triggered ability (that isn't a delayed trigger) of the permanent tries to convert it, the permanent only converts if it hasn't already converted or transformed since that ability was put on the stack. A delayed triggered ability uses the same check, but measured from when the delayed trigger was created. Either way, if the permanent already flipped, a later instruction to convert or transform it in that same window is ignored.
- If an effect says a permanent can't transform, that permanent also can't convert.
