Enchant (Auras)
Keywords · beginner
An aura with enchant [target] can only be cast targeting that kind of permanent or player. The aura attaches when it resolves and stays attached until it leaves the battlefield.
How it works
- Auras enter the battlefield already attached.
- If the creature an aura is enchanting leaves the battlefield (or otherwise becomes an illegal target), the aura goes to the graveyard as a state-based action ("aura on illegal target").
- An aura targeting a creature that gains hexproof in response is countered on resolution because its target is now illegal.
Common interactions
- Aura voltron stacks auras on a single big creature -- powerful damage, but vulnerable to spot removal because killing the creature also dumps every aura.
- Bestow auras (from Theros) can be cast as a creature or as an aura, hedging against the "creature dies, all auras die" problem.
- Totem armor auras (Rise of the Eldrazi) replace the creature's destruction with the aura's destruction once -- a save mechanic.
- Equipment vs aura: equipment is more resilient (stays on the battlefield) but auras tend to be cheaper to cast.
