Lieutenant

Keywords · beginner

Lieutenant is an ability word built for the Commander format. A card with lieutenant gains a bonus as long as you control your commander.

How it works

• If your commander is on the battlefield under your control, the lieutenant ability is active.
• If your commander is not in play (in the command zone, hand, graveyard, or exile), the lieutenant bonus is off.

Rules notes

• Lieutenant is checked continuously, so it switches on and off as your commander enters and leaves the battlefield.
• It rewards keeping your commander in play and protecting it.
