Paradigm
Keywords · advanced
Paradigm exiles the spell once it resolves, and the first time a spell with that name resolves for you, sets up a free recast of it at the start of every one of your main phases for the rest of the game.
How it works
- Paradigm gives the spell two effects: "Exile this spell," and a condition that only fires the first time a spell you control with this spell's name has resolved this game.
- When that condition is met, a delayed triggered ability is created: at the beginning of each of your precombat main phases, for the rest of the game, you create a copy of the spell in exile and may cast it without paying its mana cost.
- Because the condition checks "the first time," only the first resolution of a given paradigm spell sets up the recurring free copies — later resolutions of the same name don't create a second recurring trigger.
Rules notes
- The free copy only appears at the beginning of your precombat main phase, not on any other player's turn and not at any other point in your own turn.
- Casting the free copy is still casting a spell — its cast triggers fire and it can be countered — even though you pay no mana for it.
- The spell exiles itself on resolution instead of going to your graveyard, so it isn't sitting in the graveyard for other effects to recur.
