Paradox
Keywords · intermediate
Paradox is an ability word. It has no rules meaning of its own (CR 207.2c) — it just labels abilities that care about casting a spell from anywhere other than your hand.
How it works
- Several paradox abilities trigger "whenever you cast a spell from anywhere other than your hand," rewarding you with a +1/+1 counter, damage, or a token each time it happens.
- Other paradox abilities instead count how many such spells you've cast this turn when they resolve, for effects like drawing a card per spell or dealing damage scaled to that count.
- Casting a spell via foretell is one concrete way to cast "from anywhere other than your hand," since a foretold card is cast from exile rather than from your hand.
Rules notes
- The label "Paradox" carries no rules weight by itself; each card's full ability text is what actually triggers and resolves.
- Casting from your hand as normal never satisfies this condition, no matter how the spell later reaches the stack.
- Watch whether a given paradox ability triggers per spell cast or checks a running count for the turn — the cards in this family do both.
