Power-up
Keywords · intermediate
Power-up marks an activated ability that costs less if the permanent entered the battlefield this turn, and that can only ever be activated once.
How it works
- "Power-up — [Cost]: [Effect]" means "[Cost]: [Effect]," except if the permanent entered the battlefield this turn, the activation cost is reduced by the permanent's own mana cost, and the ability can only be activated once.
- Generic mana in the permanent's mana cost reduces generic mana in the activation cost. Colored or colorless mana in the permanent's mana cost reduces mana of that same type in the activation cost first, and any leftover reduces generic mana.
- The once-only restriction applies whether or not you got the discount — you get a single activation of a given power-up ability, period.
Rules notes
- The discount is a one-turn window: it only applies while the permanent is still on the battlefield during the turn it entered. Wait past that turn and the ability costs full price.
- The reduction only lowers the activation cost — it has nothing to do with what you spent casting the permanent in the first place.
