Survival is an ability word. A creature with survival checks each turn whether it survived to your second main phase tapped.

How it works

• Survival abilities read "At the beginning of your second main phase, if this creature is tapped, [effect]."
• The creature is usually tapped because it attacked, so survival rewards attacking and living through combat.

Rules notes

• If the creature is untapped at your second main phase (for example, it has vigilance or did not attack), survival does not happen that turn.
• Survival checks once per turn, at the start of your postcombat main phase.
