Totem Armor

Keywords · beginner

Totem armor is the old name for umbra armor: cards printed with totem armor now say umbra armor in their Oracle text (702.89b). It protects the permanent an Aura is attached to, reading "If enchanted permanent would be destroyed, instead remove all damage marked on it and destroy this Aura." (702.89a)

How it works

• When the enchanted permanent would be destroyed (by lethal damage or a "destroy" effect), that destruction is replaced.
• Instead, all damage is removed from it and the Aura is destroyed. The permanent survives.

Rules notes

• Umbra armor is a replacement effect. It saves the permanent once, then the Aura is gone.
• It only stops destruction. Exile, bounce, sacrifice, and toughness dropping to 0 or less still remove the permanent.

Rule reference

[702.89] -- the rules now call it umbra armor.
