Triple
Keywords · advanced
Triple multiplies a creature's power and/or toughness by three, or multiplies damage by three, depending on the effect.
How it works
- Tripling a creature's power and/or toughness creates a continuous effect that modifies those characteristics; it does not set them to a fixed value.
- To triple a creature's power, it gets +X/+0, where X is twice its power as the tripling effect resolves. Tripling toughness gives +0/+X the same way, where X is twice its toughness. Tripling both gives +X/+Y using each characteristic's own current value.
- Some cards instead triple damage a source would deal, rather than tripling a creature's power or toughness directly.
Rules notes
- Tripling reads the creature's power or toughness at the moment the effect resolves, so buffs or shrinks already in place before it resolves are baked into X and Y.
- If a creature's power is less than 0 when tripled, it instead gets -X/-0, where X is twice the difference between 0 and its power (and the same in reverse for a negative toughness). If one characteristic is negative and the other isn't when both are tripled at once, the creature can get a mix like -X/+Y.
- Because this is a continuous +X/+Y-style buff rather than a set effect, later effects that set power or toughness to a specific number, or that apply in a different layer, can still overwrite or interact with it — see the general continuous-effects rules for how layers order these changes.
